A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
